The KBAC Edible Book Festival is part of an international April Fools celebration of the art of the book. It happens each year at libraries and book arts centers around the world, with participants in 18 countries including Australia, Brazil, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, New Zealand, and Russia.

The Sixth Annual Edible Book Festival was held on Friday April 1, during Art Hop. Our judge for this year’s competition was WKZO radio host Lori Moore. After the judging was completed we ate all the books! This event and the Good Eats exhibition were sponsored by the Kalamazoo People’s Food Co-op.

Lori, and her Potluck Pals, have raised over a half million dollars for charity with A Holiday Dish to Pass cookbook sales. In 2010 she was recognized for her good works by 2010 YWCA Woman of Achievement Award, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters “Community Involvement Award” and the Southwestern Michigan ACLU Philip S. Denenfeld Award.

This year our creative community created 19 books good enough to eat. Over 800 visitors came to view, vote for their favorite entry and feast on the books after winners were announced.

The winner of the Grand Prize was Chris Orsolini with her entry, The Enchanted Brocolli Forest. She was awarded a free KBAC class and a copy of A Holiday Dish to Pass cookbook from Lori Moore. This year’s People′s Choice Award, a copy of A Holiday Dish to Pass, went to the Tiara Book Group for Ordinary Peeple.

The winners and other entries are beyond description so see the photos below.

Our 5th Annual Edible Book Festival took place during Art Hop on Friday, April 2. Part of an international April Fools celebration of the art of the book it happens each year at libraries and book arts centers in 18 countries around the world. Our creative community created 15 books good enough to eat and joined nearly 400 visitors to view and feast on the delectible entries.

This year’s judge was award-winning illustrator and author David Small. He has illustrated over 40 books and his drawings have appeared frequently in the New Yorker and New York Times. He is the winner of two Caldecott Medals and several other awards. His latest book, Stitches: A Memoir, a graphically told story of his childhood, was published in September of 2009.

Small chose one edible book for the top award, a free one-day workshop at the KBAC and two additional prizes: an autographed copy of Stitches: A Memoir and a very special limited edition copy of a children’s storybook by David Small packaged with a box of Cheerios. The winner of this prize was Dennis Flatt’s entry Leaves of Grass.

This year we introduced a new award, The People’s Choice, where viewers select an entry to be awarded a copy of a KBAC Poets in Print broadside of their choice and an autographed copy Stitches: A Memoir. The winner of this award was the Tiara Book Club with their entry Olive-R-Twist.
