The Art of Paste Painting

Paste painting is a surface design technique made by brushing colored paste onto a sheet of paper and using various tools to create patterns and images. Tools are provided, but students are encouraged to bring combs, chunky rubber stamps, or any other mark making objects. The result is colorful paper that can be used for art projects. Come play with us!
Spectacular Spiral Paper Quilts

In this class students will make spiral quilt blocks from paper. Each block uses a spiraling pattern and four different papers to create beautiful three-dimensional visual effects. Several varieties of decorative paper will be provided, or students can bring their own samples from home. This is a great way to use up the small paper scraps you've been saving.
Accordion “Pop-Up” Books for Kids

In this workshop kids will learn to make colorful painted accordion books that pop out as you open them. Join us to create your own fun 3-D book!
Print a Drypoint
Instructor: Katie Platte
Saturday, July 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch break
Fee: $45
Drypoint is a simple and direct printing process in which images are drawn directly onto plexiglass plates. Students will learn to develop ideas, ink the plate, and operate the printing press to create multiple images.
Adventures in Monotype
Instructor: Katie Platte

Monotypes are unique prints made from painting in ink on a smooth surface and then transferring the image to paper. The process is simple, quick, and produces astounding multi-color results when you pull it off the press.
Basic Bookbinding

Fee: $45
Making a hardcover book is a lot easier than you think. Learn to sew and bind one by hand! Participants will use traditional materials and book cloth to create a handmade journal.

Fee: $45 per session
Learn to make a series of handmade paper sheets and then proceed to express your ideas on the surface with laminations, added elements, collaged yarns, botanicals and stencils. These applied to the base sheet quickly yield unique results.
Open Paper Studio/ Papermaking Equipment Certification

Open studio is a work session for experienced papermakers. Papermakers should expect to work independently on their own projects with supervision available for use of the studio/equipment. Specific needs for your project should be discussed with Liz Faust prior to the work session. Prepared Pulp cost (per 1 lb. dry weight): Cotton $13.00, Abaca and Spanish Flax $15.00 In addition, artists who want to become ‘Artist Members’ of KBAC can schedule this session to be trained on equipment, and certified to work independently.
The Art of Journals

In this class we will explore the art of making creative and expressive journals. Students can start by taking one of the bookmaking classes listed above, or they can use a store-bought journal. We will meet on Wednesday evenings for two weeks to develop our journals and share the contents with others in the class.
You Can Draw!—Design For Beginners

Afraid to start an art project? This visual design class is for you. Learn basic skills using collage, copying, and drawing techniques in a non-threatening environment. You can then apply them to papermaking, printing, bookmaking, and more. Let yourself go!
The Art and Spirit of Prayer Flags

Saturday, July 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch break
Fee: $25
Create prayer flags for personal meaning and to share that energy with the four winds. The class will include hand painting on fabric with water-based paint using brush and stencil techniques to create a personal message. No drawing ability or experience required, only a generous heart.
LORRIE GRAINGER ABDO has taught papermaking, surface design, and bookbinding classes for all ages. She is the past President, and current Workshop Coordinator, of the Handmade Paper Guild of Southwest Michigan. Her colorful artwork can be found in galleries in Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.
JEFF ABSHEAR the Director of the KBAC, is a nationally recognized book artist. He is a recent Fulbright Research Scholar to Venice, Italy, where he worked at the Accademia di Belle Arti and studied the history of Italian printing, bookbinding, and papermaking.
MICHAEL DUNN earned his MFA at Western Michigan University and creates prints using woodcut, intaglio and lithography techniques.
LIZ FAUST is a paper and metal artist who exhibits her work at galleries throughout Michigan. She is best known for her sculptural lamps made of steel and handmade paper.
KATIE PLATTE is a graduate of the Studio Art program at Grand Valley State University. She recently completed an Internship at the Women’s Studio Workshop, an arts organization specializing in Printmaking and Book Arts in Rosendale, New York.
EVE REID is a papermaker most notable for her free and colorful use of the medium. Founder of Kalamazoo’s Handmade Paper Guild, she has been making paper for over 20 years.
