A Short Introduction to Letterpress, Metal Type

In Person
Saturday, June 15, 2024
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Instructor: Katie Platte

Back in the day (pre-typewritter/computer/smart phone) letterpress was the only way words could be printed onto paper. Now it is an artform. This class will focus on the basics of setting metal type. Each participant will bring a short poem or quotation to hand set in a typeface of their choice. We will spend time learning our way around a print shop (and a California Job Case) and then get to work! We will set our poems, proof them, and print them on one of our Vandercook presses. Participants can print several copies in black ink on white paper. If you’d like to bring colored paper you may, just make sure it is smooth and flexible. At the end of class participants will put their type away while their prints dry.  Note: Participants will be handling lead.

All materials will be provided. Participants may bring colored paper; just make sure it is smooth and flexible, and please don’t cut it down to size.
